POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Sr Director/Vice President, the newly established role of Director, Foundation Relations will lead a team of Development professionals who are instrumental in achieving the multi-million-dollar annual Foundation grants goal. The Director will be responsible for expanding this division, training team members, setting strategy and monitoring progress towards multiple goals for new and increased gifts to the institution. The Director will be responsible for managing the team on the full donor cycle of Foundation Relations from prospect research and identification, evaluation, cultivation and strategy, solicitation, recognition, and stewardship.

The Director, Foundation Relations must be an entrepreneur and strategist who can lead the Foundation Relations team and manage a portfolio of top foundations. This leader will synthesize complex information from principal investigators and program leaders to solicit grants in support of various clinical initiatives, equity-driven and education programs, training, and patient-centered research at BMC. They must be a strategic thinker with strong political sensitivities and sound judgment; an outstanding writer; a skilled project manager able to inspire multiple people to work towards the submission of high-quality, competitive grant proposals; and an expert in the intricacies of the foundation grant cycle.

An ambassador for Development across campus, the Director, Foundation Relations will collaborate with clinical department chairs and chiefs, principal investigators/program leaders, the hospital research division, and other key stakeholders. This candidate should possess knowledge of healthcare service delivery models, trends in the industry and financing of healthcare systems, and the particulars of RFPs and grant guidelines. Knowledge of research and evaluation methods and budgeting principles is beneficial along with the necessary background and experience in order to assess proposals for innovation and impact; advise investigators/program leaders concerning proposal content, funder priorities, and guidelines; and strengthen proposal contents.

The Director, Foundation Relations will collaborate with senior clinical and administrative staff, including Development colleagues, to brainstorm and generate new opportunities for BMC and manage proposal development. Whenever possible, they facilitate productive dialogue between funders and investigators/program leaders to ensure that proposals have a high likelihood of success. Initiative, intellectual curiosity, political savviness, attention to detail, and superior interpersonal skills are key to this position.

A successful candidate will perform well under deadlines; relish the many opportunities to develop new multi-disciplinary programs aligned with BMC's institutional priorities; broker new internal and external collaborations and partnerships; cultivate new seven-figure funding sources and principal investigators; and be a team player in the Development office and across campus.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

  • Work closely with principal investigators, program directors, and other senior leaders to manage key foundation relationships and develop innovative pitches and cultivation strategies.
  • Set priorities for the Foundations team and each Foundation Officer and ensure strategic use of staff resources.
  • Provide input to shape organizational and program strategies to align with foundation funding opportunities.
  • Working with the Foundations team, identify and highlight emerging foundation opportunities that are consistent with the organizational strategic plan.
  • As needed, convene planning discussions that include organizational and program leadership.
  • As appropriate, integrate foundation strategies into department-wide activities and events.
  • Provide input to departmental revenue tracking and Development Department annual plans.
  • Actively work in collaboration with other members of the Development team to ensure all collateral, grants, proposals, etc., are distinct in nature and impact and results focused.
  • Proactively market BMC to current and new funders.
  • Identify priorities for multi-year "vision" papers and other tools to both inform planning and increase BMC visibility with prospects and funders.
  • Increase the visibility of BMC leadership and experts with funders through a robust cultivation and stewardship plan.
  • Remain current about the foundation funding landscape, identify opportunities, and build a strategy for engagement, cultivation and solicitation.
  • Possess in-depth knowledge of healthcare service delivery models, trends in the organization and financing of healthcare systems, and the intricacies of funding guidelines.

Drive Revenue

  • Lead the development and implementation of foundation fundraising strategies to achieve annual revenue targets, while incorporating equity, diversity, and inclusion best practices.
  • Set annual goals for identifying new prospects and securing revenue from new foundation prospects.
  • Oversee maintenance and monitoring of systems for tracking foundation strategies, moves management, and revenue.
  • Write and submit high-quality inquiry letters, proposals, and reports to current and prospective funders.
  • Identify Foundation prospect research priorities for the research team.
  • Coordinate with Program Directors, Foundations team, and other key staff to evaluate prospects and develop relationship-building strategies.
  • Ensure accurate and timely budgets and financial reports for submission to foundations and ensure accurate grants management, grant tracking, and record keeping in donor and financial systems.
  • Maintain and grow a portfolio of high-capacity foundation funders.
  • Build strong relationships with new and existing high-capacity donors.
  • Organize visits and other cultivation activities to increase BMC's visibility with these funders.
  • Develop and actively move a list of priority prospects.
  • Drive the research and identification of new funding sources for new and ongoing clinical initiatives, education programs, and research; capture several million dollars of grant support for BMC annually.

Leadership

  • Oversee and work with Foundations team to formulate, develop, and execute foundation cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies.
  • In collaboration with Director, Corporate Partnerships, and other Development leaders create a shared services team to maximize collaboration, revenue, and resources, while driving revenue and organizing work among the optimal team members.
  • Supervise and mentor staff to ensure the timely production of high-quality proposals, concept papers, and reports.
  • Support and guide Foundation team's development of deep program expertise; ensure the team is a content resource for the entire Development team
  • With the team, design strategy; write narratives, letters of inquiry, and letters of support; develop budgets and budget justifications; prepare collateral materials; and ensure compliance with award requirements.
  • Work with the Foundations team to ensure accurate foundation record keeping in NXT and effective use of NXT reports.
  • Evaluate the current staff resources, identifying outstanding resources and skills necessary for this expanding department.
  • Empower team to maximize foundation funding opportunities and submit the most competitive proposals through ongoing training and dissemination of new/modified strategies and analysis of regional and national foundations of significance.
  • Assist in the development of department, team, and personal goals and annual strategic planning process.
  • Assist with other initiatives of the hospital as needed, including service in support of major BMC events organized by the Development Office (e.g., Gala).
  • Interface with Legal to ensure compliance with all laws and BMC policies.
  • Maintain knowledge of BMC programs and priorities.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or as needed.
  • Conforms to hospital standards of performance and conduct, including those pertaining to patient rights, so that the best possible customer service and patient care may be provided.
  • Utilizes hospital's cultural beliefs as the basis for decision making and to support the hospital's mission and goals.
  • Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.
  • Must adhere to all of BMC's RESPECT behavioral standards.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

  • Master's degree required.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

  • None.

EXPERIENCE:

  • 10-12 years of foundation relations, grant development, and writing or program development experience with demonstrated growth in scope, scale, and responsibility of positions.
  • Six years experience of managing team members and driving grant cycle process.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Demonstrated fundraising success in driving revenue through foundation relationships, preferably in a healthcare setting.
  • Desire to work as part of a team of highly engaged, enthusiastic, dedicated people focused on engaging our foundation donors and prospects in the vital work of our organization.
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast paced, deadline-driven environment with attention to detail.
  • Resourcefulness, creativity, adaptability and flexibility required.
  • Adept with innovating and collaborating in large, complex systems.
  • Proven track record in complex project management and multiple demands.
  • Demonstrated ability in managing multiple team members.
  • Proven ability to make decisions, work independently and as a team player.

  • Excellent writing, editing and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience developing budgets.

  • Proficient with standard software and donor database used in healthcare office settings (e.g., MS Word, Excel, NXT, web browser, etc.)
