The Opportunity: We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Development and Construction Controller to manage the financial operations of our domestic and international real estate development and construction business. As the Controller, you will be responsible for working with the development and construction teams to ensure accurate and timely accounting, financial reporting, budgeting and forecasting functions for the development and construction business. Your primary objective will be to ensure accurate and timely financial information, maintain strong internal controls, and support strategic decision-making by providing valuable financial insights. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in development and construction accounting and finance activities and a proven track record of successful financial management within the Development and Construction Industry. This is a remote position.

Duties and Functions:

  1. Financial Management:
    • All aspects of development and construction financial operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, job cost accounting, payroll, general ledger, and banking activities.
    • Develop and maintain accurate financial records, ensuring compliance with accounting principles, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
    • Monitor cash flow (construction spending, deposits, and closings), construction financing and working capital, revenue, and expenses, identifying potential risks and opportunities for improvement.
  2. Budgeting and Forecasting:
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, department heads, and senior management to prepare the annual budget and periodic financial forecasts.
    • Monitor job costs, budget performance, and operating metrics regularly, analyzing profitability and identifying areas for cost savings and efficiency improvements.
    • Provide financial insights and guidance to support effective resource allocation and financial planning.
  3. Financial Reporting:
    • Prepare and present accurate and timely development and construction financial reports and projections to management, both on a unit level and for the overall project
    • Ensure financial statements, balance sheets, income statements, cash flows, and other financial reports comply with relevant standards.
    • Develop and maintain key financial metrics and dashboards for monitoring financial health.
  4. Internal Controls and Compliance:
    • Establish and enforce robust internal control procedures to safeguard assets and prevent fraudulent activities.
    • Ensure compliance with financial regulations, tax laws, and other statutory requirements.
    • Coordinate with external auditors and regulatory agencies during audits and reviews.
  5. Financial Analysis and Strategic Support:
    • Conduct financial analysis and provide insights to support cost and profit objectives, strategic decision-making and planning.
    • Assist in evaluating the financial viability of new projects, initiatives, or investments.
    • Present financial data and reports to leadership, providing clear explanations and recommendations.
  6. Team Leadership and Development:
    • Manage and mentor the finance team, fostering a collaborative and high-performing work environment.
    • Provide training and professional development opportunities to enhance the team's skills and knowledge.

Qualification Standards:

  • Bachelor's degree in finance, Accounting, or a related field.
  • Proven experience (at least 5-7 years) as a Controller or in a senior financial management role within the Real Estate Development Industry (Either Developer or Construction Industry).
  • Strong knowledge of construction finance, accounting principles, and financial reporting standards.
  • Familiarity with financial software systems and proficiency in using accounting software and MS Excel for data analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to create and manage budgets, forecasts, and financial models.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with a keen eye for detail and accuracy.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Strong leadership qualities, with the ability to lead and motivate a finance team effectively.
