About the Role

Verisk Atmospheric and Environmental Research (AER) is looking for a Staff Scientist to perform and initiate research in oceanographic and climate science. Possible research areas include, but are not limited to:

  • Coupled modeling linking the ocean to the atmosphere, the cryosphere, and/or the land
  • Seasonal to decadal prediction and predictability
  • Ocean biogeochemistry and air-sea gas exchange
  • Coastal processes, including marine extremes
  • Relationships between climate and extreme weather

As a new member of Verisk AER's internationally recognized Research and Development Division, you will be provided (1) ample opportunities to collaborate with scientists at AER and other prestigious research institutions and (2) individual and team mentorship to develop your own externally funded research program.

About the Day-to-Day Responsibilities of the Role

  • You will contribute to ongoing research programs in ocean circulation, sea level, and climate variability and change.
  • You will develop new approaches for analyzing, comparing, and interpreting large and diverse datasets, including satellite and in-situ observations and numerical model output.
  • You will lead high-impact peer-reviewed papers, give presentations at scientific conferences, and keep up with relevant scientific and computational advances.
  • You will grow your own research program by establishing internal and external collaborations and applying for external sources of funding, at a rate commensurate with previous experience.
Qualifications

About You and How You Can Excel in This Role

  • Advanced degree in a climate-related discipline, with oceanographic research experience.
  • Track record of research innovation, independence, and collaboration.
  • Strong scientific programming skills in Python (preferred), R, Matlab, and/or lower-level languages.
  • Excellent writing skills and comfort with public speaking.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
  • Proposal and/or grant writing experience is a plus.
