The Comparative Medicine Technician II is responsible for preventative health monitoring, veterinary care, and animal husbandry for multiple species. Completes all aspects of vivarium technical operations according to standard operating procedures. These duties include, but are not limited to, providing clean sanitized nesting material, fresh food, water, and environmental enrichment on a scheduled and as needed basis.

Position Details

  • Monitors animal health and well-being. Evaluates animal health, reports abnormal conditions, monitors and provides clinical treatments as directed by veterinarian, program management or designee.

  • Documents, organizes and maintains timely records in the laboratory animal resource software system.

  • Provides technical services and support to research staff.

  • Provides and monitors enrichment enhancements.

  • Provides fresh feed, water, and bedding material as scheduled and as needed.

  • Maintains breeding, identification, and gestational databases.

  • Operates bio-safety cabinets, animal transfer stations, individually ventilated rack systems.

  • Operates regulated and calibrated veterinary equipment.

  • Assists with preparing autoclaved caging material for animal colonies according to standard operating procedures.

  • Occasionally operates mechanical cage wash units, bulk steam sterilizers, decontamination equipment and material-transfer vacuum systems according to standard operating procedures and manufacturer instructions.

  • Ensures compliance with required regulations and consistently follows program and institutional procedures and policies.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED and 1-3 years employed in a laboratory animal husbandry position.

  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with research staff and peers.

  • Weekend and holiday work required. May require working a shifted weekly schedule that routinely includes weekend days.

  • AALAS certification preferred.

  • Must function well independently and as a team-member.

This position qualifies as an essential employee. Employment is conditional upon the satisfactory completion of an occupational health assessment for working with laboratory animals. Must have the ability to lift 50 lbs. and push/pull 300lbs.
